Description: Every breed of dog has their own strengths and intelligence depending on why and how they were bred. In 1994, Dr Stanley Coren - a professor of canine psychology at the University of British Columbia VA - published a book aptly called “The Intelligence of Dogs”, that would rank 133 breeds of dog in order of intelligence. Our ranking: Number 10: Australian Cattle Dog Number 9: Rottweiler Number 8: Papillon Number 7: Labrador Retriever Number 6: Shetland Sheepdog Number 5: Doberman pinscher Number 4: Golden Retriever Number 3: German Shepherd Number 2: Poodle Number 1: Border Collie In at number 1 is the super smart Border Collie! This breed originated from the UK where it is still used today to herd sheep. They are often described as the most intelligent dog in the world due to their ability to train and remember a huge list of words. Border Collies are trained to listen to their owners whistles and words, but their superpower comes in the form of their massive memory! Typically dogs can learn on average 165 words, but collies can learn 400+! Have you heard of the Border Collie Chaser? She knows over 1000 words, having memorised the names for hundreds of different animals, balls and toys - she can even understand basic sentences, like commands relating to how she should touch a toy. For example: Nose the ball, Paw the tiger. As you can see, most of these intelligent dogs were bred for jobs that require their own decision making, concentration and above all - intelligence. But, dogs aren’t the only animals with an excellent brain; dolphins are problem solving whiz kids, and even have names for each other in the form of unique squeaks. And of course, we can’t forget chimps - there are many that can even understand sign language - pretty impressive, isn’t it? And you don’t have to be a scientist to measure a dog’s intelligence. There are some simple tests you can do at home to see if your dog is a smart cookie! Does your dog learn commands faster than others? If you have to correct him less than 6 times then he has above average intelligence. Or a simple game of hide-and-seek can quickly tell you if you are dealing with a genius. Show your dog a treat and hide it somewhere in the room. Take him out of the room and give him some attention to distract him from the task in hand, before leading him back into the room. If he goes straight for the treat he has excellent spatial awareness and memory skills!
